True North’s Wilderness Education Series offers recurring seminars catered to children and adults who are seeking to gain confidence towards survival craft and outdoor adventures.
Each seminar will include educational discussion and practical exercises which will introduce wilderness safety mindset, creative problem solving, and offer hands-on training with relevant equipment.

Start out by learning the best mindset to prepare for the wilderness, including understanding risks and how to mitigate them, basic gear factors, and mission planning. Discuss what essentials should be included in your first aid kit and see how to deal with a more advanced injury such as a punctured limb or immobility..
Gain confidence in being able to adventure in the woods with the essential tools to keep you safe and on the right path. During this workshop, you will learn basic land navigation skills including how to use a compass, protractor, and understanding mapped terrain features.. Plus, learn your first knot of the week!
Come learn how to select gear to take on your wilderness adventures and how to pack it properly. Also, understand the fundamentals for wilderness survival by learning essentials for creating a shelter with necessary supplies. You will learn knot of the week #2!
Now that you have the basics down for what to bring, how to navigate in the wilderness, and creating a shelter for survival, you are ready for sustainment! In this seminar, you will learn all about proper fire building, water filtration, and food essentials. Gain the knowledge to keep you alive in the wild! See and practice knot #3 of the week!
Welcome to the first cumulative mission adventure in the woods! Now is the time to put all you have learned into practice with a real mission working with a team. It will include land navigation, safety, first aid, knot tying (1-3) setting up camp, and sustainability.
Now you are ready to learn the essentials for overnight wilderness survival! Learn about overnight safety, risks/mitigation, animals to be aware of, and tools to have on hand. Knot #4 of the week will be demonstrated and practiced as well.
Come join us as we teach you all about hunting and trapping for wilderness survival! Take an adventure in the woods to gain understanding in the proper mindset, the basic skills for animal tracking, camouflage necessities, and essential gear! Learn Knot #5 of the week with the team!
This seminar builds off the first Land Navigation Starter one. Go more in depth with maps, measuring coordinates, using a protractor and compass to navigate. Gain understanding in pace measurements and counting distances. Knot #6 will be demonstrated too!
Build off your first shelter building basics and take shelter building to the next level in this seminar! You will learn more advanced shelter building and practice working as a team to brainstorm solutions using your critical thinking skills. Finish up with Knot #7 for this wilderness series!
This will be the finale event and put all your skills you have been learning to the test! Come out to complete the mission to survive in the wild as you develop your leadership skills and problem solve solutions with your team!
Hi! I am John, avid rock climber, backpacker, engineer, Yoga instructor, and Army Lieutenant. I have been enjoying large-scale adventures for over a decade - from bagging 14,000ft peaks, summiting Half Dome, to conducting military operations in the field - I believe that everyone can benefit from adventuring in nature, and I am excited to share my practices & lessons learned with others looking to enhance their outdoor experiences!
